Sorption characteristics of biphenol A on Xiangjiang River sediments

Abstract

The sorption/desorption characteristics of biphenol A (BPA) on Xiangjiang River sediments were investigated. The rapid sorption played the main role in the sorption of BPA on the Xiangjiang River sediments and Freundlich model could describe preferably the sorption isotherms. The black carbon substance and hole-filling looks of the organic substances in sediment induced the behaviors of nonlinear sorption and desorption hysteresis of BPA. The sediment sorption of BPA was an exothermic process, mainly attribute to the physical sorption driven by spontaneous enthalpy. The amount of adsorbed BPA on unit sediment decreased with increase of sediment concentration; and it increased with an increase of ionic strength. Under acidic condition, the amount of adsorbed BPA on the unit sediment decreased with pH value increase; whereas this influence was not marked under alkaline condition.
