BACKGROUND: Despite a major reduction in pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR), patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) do not always return to functional New York Heart Association (NYHA) class I after pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA).
