Evaluation of cutting force and temperature when turning hardened die steel with AMBORITE AMB90 and DBC50 tooling

Abstract

The temperatures produced when hard turning tool/die steel, heat treated to above 45 HRC with polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) tooling, cause softening of the workpiece/chip in the cutting zone. Using AMBORITE AMB90 and AMBORITE DBC50 PCBN tool materials, E-G. Ng and D.K. Aspinwall review the effect of thermal conductivity, workpiece hardness and cutting speed on chip formation and workpiece surface integrity.
