Intelligent, Open Architecture Control for Machining Systems

Abstract

Abstract This paper describes the development of an open architecture controller (OAC) for CNC machining systems. The controller design, being based on the few specifications described in the literature, employs open hardware and software interfaces to facilitate the development of complex manufacturing systems. A comprehensive control system for intelligent, multi-pass machining is proposed, and its implementation on an OAC turret lathe is described. Preliminary experimental results are presented, and directions for further work are outlined.
