A research team in Canada initiated a research program aimed at selecting environmentally friendly coatings for magnesium alloys and to develop a new washer material that could minimize the galvanic corrosion between magnesium castings and steel fasteners. Seventeen different types of coatings including anodizing coatings, sol gel, powdercoat, and polymer coatings among others were chosen. Initial results indicate that appropriate materials can reduce the extent of galvanic corrosion on uncoated magnesium alloys.
