Near-drum tube thinning in coastal power boilers

Abstract

An attempt was made to better understand a near-drum tube thinning problem affecting power boilers operating at coastal pulp and paper mills. Based on boiler operation, deposit analyses and tube examinations, the dominant factor responsible for the degradation is environmental, and is chemical (corrosion), as opposed to physical (erosion) in nature. Both corrosion mechanisms believed to be responsible are not entirely consistent with the observations and results presented.
