On MIMO Polarization in the User's Presence

Abstract

We investigate the user head effects on the performance of a two-antenna system as applied to the polarization of these antennas. The user head effects are studied at frequencies 700 MHz, 950 MHz and 1880 MHz. Co-polarized (V-polarized) and a cross-polarized (X-polarized) scenarios are investigated. It was found that the loss in channel power due to the user head becomes more severe as the frequency of operation increases. The loss is more significant in the V-polarized scenario and hence the channel capacity becomes lower than in the X-polarized scenario. This, however, changes at 1880 MHz where the user presence helped reduce the weight difference in the V-polarized sub-channels improving its capacity over that of the X-polarized scenario.
