An investigation of the phase transitions in tin by positron lifetime measurements

Abstract

Positron lifetimes in tin have been measured in the temperature range 80-500K. For the first time the transitions both from the beta to the alpha phase and back to the beta phase could be detected by the technique of positron annihilation. Moreover, it was even possible to observe the state and the progress of each transition as a function of time.
