Overview

Yuhong (Cathy) Yuan is a Senior Staff Scientist in the Driscoll Family Digestive Health Centre at the University Health Network, Toronto.

Dr. Yuan completed her medical training in gastroenterology and previously served as a Lecturer at Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences in Guangzhou, China. She holds an M.D., M.Sc., and Ph.D., and subsequently completed two years of postdoctoral training at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and the University of Wolverhampton in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Yuan immigrated to Canada in 2001. While working as a research fellow, she pursued a second master's degree in Health Research Methodology at McMaster University, graduating in 2005. Since then, she has held a number of research and leadership positions, including Research Associate in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University, Cochrane Information Specialist and Managing Editor within the Cochrane Collaboration, and Senior Research Associate at the London Health Sciences Centre Research Institute. She currently serves as a part-time Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University, an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Medicine at Western University, and an Evidence Synthesis Specialist with the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

Dr. Yuan has collaborated extensively with internationally recognized investigators and has contributed to the training and mentorship of researchers around the world. As a guideline methodologist, she has played a leading role in the development of numerous clinical practice guidelines for organizations including the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG), American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), European Association of Urology (EAU), International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), and the Neurocritical Care Society (NCS), among others. She has co-authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and government reports, and her work has been widely recognized, with a Google Scholar h-index of 78. She has also been invited to lecture at numerous universities and professional organizations worldwide. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to health research and international scientific collaboration, Dr. Yuan was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal in Canada in 2025.
