Overview

Andre Comiran Tonon, MD, PhD (he, they) is a psychiatrist and researcher in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University. Using wearable devices and digital tools that track sleep and daily activity patterns, he studies how disruptions in biological rhythms shape the course of mood disorders, and whether those rhythms can help predict who responds to treatment and who doesn't. People living with depression, bipolar disorder, and those whose mental health intersects with gender identity and hormonal biology are at the centre of this work.
Trained in psychiatry and chronobiology, Andre brings together clinical care and population-level research across rest-activity rhythms, sleep, light exposure, women's mental health, sexual and gender minority health.
Outside the lab, he is a trained classical ballet dancer, an avid knitter and sewist, and someone who takes his complex strategy board games very seriously.
