Delana Thompson

Assistant Clinical Professor (Adjunct), Family Medicine

Delana Thompson MD CCFP attended the Northern Ontario School of Medicine from 2011 to 2015, then completed her residency in family medicine in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, from 2015 to 2017.  Through her training and early practice, she focussed primarily on acute care,
rural / remote medicine, and indigenous health. 

From 2017 through 2024 she practised in a variety of rural and remote communities in Ontario, Manitoba, and the Northwest Territories.  After making Kitchener Waterloo (KW) her home in 2020, she began providing service through KW Urgent Care Clinics in 2021, where she
continues to the present.

 
In 2024, she found her calling in gender-affirming care, a unique and underserviced area of family medicine. At the SHORE Centre in KW, she continues to support the transitions of the transgender and gender diverse population of the region.  She brings her own lived
experience to inform her care, as well as her role as an educator and researcher.  

In 2025, she joined the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University as a Clinical Professor (adjunct) with the goal of establishing programs and projects that foster trans health
research and scholarship.  She also enjoys sharing her passion for safe and effective gender-affirming care with learners, in the context of both individual clinical rotations and formal teaching sessions.
