Overview

is a family physician in solo practice in Dundas, Ontario since 1976. He is an Associate Clinical Professor, Department of Family Medicine, McMaster University. He has a part-time faculty appointment. He did his undergraduate medical training at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda.

He is the medical director of St. Peter's Residence at Chedoke Long Term Care. He is the Chair of the Care of the Elderly Working Group for the Department of Family Medicine, McMaster University, Physician Lead for the Greater Hamilton Health Network Long Term Care Advisory and Physician Lead for the Thrive Group Center of Excellence in Hamilton, Ontario. He is the Chair of the Long term Care Clinicians Interest Group in Hamilton, Ontario.

He is the recipient of the Dr. Jim Morris Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in Family Medicine, McMaster University in 1997 and 2004 and Outstanding Preceptor Award, Family Medicine Undergraduate MD Program, McMaster University. He received the Award of Excellence by the Ontario College of Family Physicians in 2008 and the Physician of the Year Award by Ontario Long Term Care Clinicians in 2016. In 2014, the Department of Family Medicine, McMaster University created an award named "Dr. Kanwal Shankardass Annual Care of the Elderly Award' given to a deserving family medicine resident. in 2021, City of Hamilton awarded him the "Senior of the Year, Leadership Award.
