Dr. Richard Perez is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, & Impact at McMaster University. He completed his MSc and PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Ottawa. His doctoral thesis explored and developed novel methods of generating lifetime burden estimates for determinents of health on mortality, disability, and health care costs by combining health surveys linked to administrative data with advanced imputational techniques. His research focuses on applied epidemiology, health services research, and data science.
He is currently the Staff Scientist for the ICES McMaster Site and has been affiliated with ICES in various capacities since 2010. ICES is a research institute that utilizes its vast inventory of linkable health data sets to evaluate healthcare delivery and outcomes. This inventory includes much of the publicly funded administrative health services records for the Ontario population eligible for universal health coverage since 1986. The breadth and scope of ICES data is the foundational resource for creating unbiased evidence to drive health system policy, planning and evaluation. It also supports hundreds of research projects each year undertaken by researchers across the province. In his current position, he provides oversight to all ICES projects conducted through the ICES McMaster site.
