Dilyana Mincheva
Associate Professor, Communication Studies & Media Arts

Overview

Dilyana Mincheva is a faculty member in the Department of Communication Studies and Media Arts at McMaster University. Her research centers on the concept of the Western–Islamic public sphere, a framework she has developed to analyze how Islamic ethical vocabularies and liberal media forms interact in contemporary global contexts. She is the author of Muslim Intellectual Discourse in the West: The Emergence of a Western–Islamic Public Sphere (Liverpool University Press, 2016/2022), which first articulated this concept, and Adversarial Islamic Feminism in the Western–Islamic Public Sphere, which extends it through feminist media analysis. Her work spans media, religion, and feminist theory, with a particular focus on digital Muslim publics, adversarial media practices, and the politics of representation. She has published in journals such as Feminist Media Studies, Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies, Canadian Journal of Communication Studies, and Religions. Her current research explores the resonant relationship between Palestine and the Balkans, combining ethnographic, media, and theoretical approaches to examine how historical memory, affect, and political discourse circulate across different publics. She is completing a monograph that develops the concepts of resonance and the border as methodological tools for rethinking the public sphere in a global frame.
