Hasan Merali
Associate Professor, Pediatrics

Overview

Dr. Hasan Merali is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, McMaster University and a pediatric emergency medicine physician at McMaster Children’s Hospital. Dr. Merali received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed his residency in Pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital. He completed fellowships in both Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Global Child Health at The Hospital for Sick Children. During this time, Dr. Merali obtained a Master of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins University and was appointed Associate Faculty at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins, where he works with the Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit.

Dr. Merali is highly active in global research, particularly involving newborn resuscitation and child injury prevention in low- and middle-income countries. Currently, his research focuses on examining factors associated with child passenger helmet and restraint use. This work is part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety, a multi-country project aiming to reduce road traffic injuries and fatalities.

He has published more than 25 peer-reviewed journal articles and his writing has been featured in Science, The Boston Globe, NBC, CBC, and Popular Science. His first book, Sleep Well, Take Risks, Squish the Peas: Secrets from the Science of Toddlers for a Happier, More Successful Way of Life, was recently published by Health Communications Inc. in March 2024.

Dr. Merali is a member of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Research Oversight Committee at McMaster University. Outside the university, he is a member of the Global Neonatal Advisory Committee at the American Academy of Pediatrics.
