Hertzel C. Gerstein MD MSc FRCPC FCAHS FRSC is a Canadian endocrinologist, clinical epidemiologist, and internationally recognized diabetes researcher. He is Professor of Medicine at McMaster University, where he holds the McMaster-Sanofi Population Health Institute Chair in Diabetes Research and Care. He is also the Interim Executive Director of the Population Health Research Institute, which is jointly governed by McMaster University and HHS Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS).
His research firmly established international long-term diabetes-focused outcomes RCTs as the norm to support Evidence-Based Diabetes Care. Trials he designed and led have randomized more than 90,000 people with either diabetes or prediabetes, and have studied and identified clinically important, life-saving diabetes therapies. These plus many biomarker studies, editorials, and epidemiologic analyses have been widely cited with an h-index of 117. His awards include the 2012 Canadian Diabetes Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2022 American Diabetes Association’s Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Diabetes Research Award.
