Maryam Manely Zamani

Dr. Maryam Manely Zamani earned her Ph.D. from the University of Tehran, and also completed a year-long internship at the School of Medicine, University of Washington where her research focused on investigating cell-cell communication in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and exploring the effects of quorum quenching in mixed bacterial populations.

Following the completion of her Ph.D., Dr. Zamani joined McMaster University as a postdoctoral fellow. Her work primarily involved the specialized fields of synthetic biology and functional genomics, with the goal of identifying the minimal genomic subset required for biological nitrogen fixation in Scinorhizobium meliloti. Building upon her expertise, she pursued a second postdoctoral position at McMaster, where she focused on characterizing phage defense mechanisms in S. meliloti.

Throughout her academic journey, Dr. Zamani has consistently demonstrated a dedication to education and a passion for teaching. She won a two-year competitive teaching fellowship from the School of Interdisciplinary Science at McMaster University. During this period, she taught courses encompassing synthetic biology, genome editing technology, and plant-microbe interactions. Her ability to guide and mentor students, helping them develop essential skills and explore their passions, has been a source of great fulfillment for her.

Motivated by her enthusiasm for both teaching and laboratory work, Dr. Zamani joined the School of Interdisciplinary Science (SIS) in 2022 as an instructional assistant at Level IV.
