Mark Warwas
Assistant Clinical Professor, Medicine

I completed my undergraduate and residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of British Columbia. I had the opportunity to pursue the Perioperative Vascular Medicine Training Program as a joint program between McMaster University and the University of British Columbia. I was able to bring skills gained from this fellowship back to my home hospital, Surrey Memorial Hospital, Surrey, BC, where I am working with colleagues to develop a robust perioperative service as well as to Vancouver General Hospital where I am able to participate in the evolution of a more mature perioperative program.

My passion for perioperative medicine stems from the fact that millions of surgeries are performed annually. Patients going for surgery are older and have more comorbidities than ever before. These complex patients need and benefit from multidisciplinary care including involvement of perioperative specialists in their co-management. Furthermore, due to close monitoring in hospital or as a result of complication, it is often discovered that our complex surgical patients have undertreated chronic disease. Perioperative medicine represents a bridge to outpatient chronic disease management and cardiovascular risk reduction. In that realm, to equip me to provide better care for these patients, I am currently pursuing certification in lipidology and obesity medicine.

My goal is to provide care to patients through comprehensive management of chronic disease, cardiovascular risk reduction, and acute care in hospital on the surgical or medical floor.
