Optimizing shunt capacitor installations using inductive co-ordination principles

Abstract

Optimum locations of shunt capacitors on distribution feeders have usually been approached by theoretical simulation using computer programs. Many capacitor installations have given cause to major inductive interference in communication circuits, and therefore a new approach using inductive co-ordination principles is proposed here. Original results concerning residual currents and unbalanced voltages created by capacitors are presented, and a simple practical method to find optimum locations is proposed. Finally a Standard Engineering Practice relevant to shunt capacitors is included in part to provide the field engineer with practical working tools to be used in inductive co-ordination of shunt capacitor installations.
