Ontogeny of mouse and rat antithrombin III

Abstract

The ontogeny of mouse and rat antithrombin III (AT III) was determined by Laurell rocket immunoelectrophoresis using crossreacting monospecific rabbit anti-rat AT III antiserum. Rat and mouse AT III share common antigenic determinants and have identical electrophoretic mobility. Crossed immunoelectrophoresis of either rat or mouse sera reveals a prominent single arc of AT III with an indication of other components having faster electrophoretic mobility, possibly antithrombin-protease complexes. There is similarity between the ontogeny of rodent and human antithrombin III. This suggests that antithrombin III plays a similar role in the control of the coagulation pathway among different species.
