Growth of Austenite in the Intercritical Annealing of Fe-C-Mn Dual Phase Steels

Abstract

The growth of austenite during the intercritical annealing of a ternary Fe-C-Mn alloy is analysed, using a local equilibrium model. It is shown that austenite growth is first controlled by the diffusion of carbon. These initial stages are usually complete within a few seconds and are followed by a period of slow manganese-diffusion-controlled growth.
