Building a Delirium Network

Abstract

The experience of delirium, either having delirium or providing care to a person with delirium, produces a strong emotional reaction in people. The sudden onset and fluctuating course, the delirium knowledge gap, and the person not being in control create emotions of fear, isolation, and helplessness among patients, families, and professionals. These emotions create a common bond among delirium professionals and, when coupled with outlets for action, can lead to positive improvements in delirium knowledge and delirium care. The chapter highlights local, national, and international networks that have been developed from a common bond created by the experience of delirium.
