Abstract
Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a multifactorial syndrome in which the function of the central nervous system is impaired due to the metabolic consequences of liver disease. The two main components of liver pathology which lead to HE are the decrease in the number of functioning hepatocytes and the vascular rearrangement causing blood from the portal vein to bypass the liver.
