The Use of Artificial Intelligence to Identify Trajectories of Severe Mental Disorders

Abstract

Bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and schizophrenia are severe mental disorders with high rates of morbidity and mortality as well as cognitive and psychosocial impairments. They are also highly heterogeneous with regard to clinical courses. Machine learning algorithms can identify subtle factors related to different trajectories, enabling them to predict the probability of a specific outcome at the individual level or even to identify subgroups of individuals within a diagnosis. Thus, machine learning techniques may help clinicians to develop tailored interventions, avoiding a pernicious course of the disease.
