Evaluation of Rutting and Moisture Susceptibility of Geogrid-Embedded Asphalt by Hamburg Wheel-Track Testing

Abstract

Geogrid has been applied in different civil engineering applications including pavements. By serving as a tensile element and providing lateral constraints, it is expected to provide rutting resistance to the asphalt. This chapter investigates geogrid-reinforced asphalt by conducting Hamburg Wheel-Tracking Test (HWTT). Three types of geogrids were studied. The sample preparation practice was developed to make cylindrical geogrid-embedded asphalt samples in the lab. Rutting resistance and moisture susceptibility were analyzed from the HWTT results. It was found that geogrid can provide better rutting and moisture damage resistance, especially for those with smaller aperture sizes.
