The effects of LMX on employee conceptualizations and display of OCB

Abstract

We provide evidence of three quite distinct, core facets of employees' conceptualizations of organizational citizenship behavior (OCB): role breadth, instrumentality and perceived leader expectations. Furthermore, we show that these facet conceptualizations mediate the relationship between leader-member-exchange (LMX) and OCB. Our results offer new insights, beyond purely social-exchange explanations, for the processes by which LMX influences OCB.
