When I began my professional life, I gave no thought whatsoever to where I wanted to be in terms of roles, geography, or life circumstance. I was as unlike most of my friends as I could be, with no sense of finding a life mate after starting a career, choosing a place to live, and finding a house. I did not plan in the traditional sense of the word; I found myself being responsive to opportunity. This trait, while more moderate now than it was 40-odd years ago, still remains, and for that, I give great thanks. As I have worked with colleagues over time, I have found myself saying with frequency, “If a door opens, look in, and if it seems right, go through it.” And, in so many ways, this is the credo by which I have made choices, finding some to be great and others to vary between being alright to downright wrong for me.
