PHYSICAL AND MATHEMATICAL MODELING OF FLUID FLOW IN ELECTRIC ARC FURNACES

Abstract

A. 1/3-scale “thin-slice” model of an EAF was designed to simulate foaming gas evolution, arc jets, bottom stirring and oxygen lances. Liquid velocities were measured by a particle velocimetry system. Numerical simulations of these effects were made using two commercial CFD packages. Comparisons with measured results show that considerable care is required to select the appropriate model and to interpret the computational results.
