Submerged arc smelting has been proposed as one of the steps in rotary hearth smelting-reduction due to its excellent slag cleaning characteristics obtained in the nonferrous industry. A mathematical model for fluid flow, heat transfer and power dissipation in slag and metal in a 6-in-line nickel smelting furnace has been developed and validated. The implications for iron smelting will be addressed.
