  • Abstract A new cobalt arsenate, Co7As2O12, has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Its crystal structure has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction: Imma space group, a = 5.832(1) Å, b = 18.041(4) Å, c = 8.441(2) Å, Z = 4, wR(F 2) = 0.096 for 2176 independent reflections. Co7As2O12 is isostructural with the spinelloid phase II and with the mineral manganostibite, Mn7SbAsO12. Its fully ordered cation distribution on the octahedral and tetrahedral sites of the oxygen cubic close-packing, (Co5As)[6][(Co2As)[4]O10]O2, has been rationalized in terms of a bond-valence analysis of the structure.
