Evaluating Surgical Interventions

Abstract

Understanding how to evaluate surgical Intervention is critical to patient care. The objective of this chapter is to highlight key methodological concepts that are important for readers of the surgical literature. Specific issues include Randomization, Blinding, Sample size, and Power calculations. Common statistical concepts including Odds ratio, relative and absolute Risk, as well as multivariable analysis are also reviewed. We highlight these concepts through the critical Appraisal of a scientific paper.
