In May of 1985 I was asked by the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization, the group within the Office of the U.S. Secretary of Defense that is responsible for the “Star Wars” program, to serve on a $1000/day advisory panel, the Sdio Panel on Computing in Support of Battle Management. The panel was to make recommendations about a research and development program to solve the computational problems inherent in space-based defense systems.
