Simulating materials handling processes using both discrete event and agent-based technologies

Abstract

Simulation offers a quick, controllable and tunable approach for evaluating complex processes in manufacturing environments. This paper proposes a hybrid simulation approach, using both discrete event and agent-based technologies, to model complex materials handling processes in an assembly line. A materials handling simulation prototype is implemented using AnyLogicâ„¢, a commercial multi-paradigm modeling tool. In this prototype, JIT-based principles are applied to both the production and materials handling processes. The performance Is studied and system optimization directions are suggested. The hybrid modeling approach facilitates a responsive and adaptive environment where various "what-if" scenarios can be simulated under different simulation configurations and real-time changes.
