Influence factors and mechanism of biological manganese removal

Abstract

The effect of dissolved oxygen, pH and oxidation-reduction potential on the biological manganese removal was studied, and the mechanism of the biological manganese removal was investigated in the experiment. The results show that the biological manganese removal is influenced slightly by variations in dissolved oxygen concentration, and when pH is 5-8.5 or oxidation-reduction potential lies between 430 mV and 720 mV, the biological filter has good removal of manganese. The biological manganese removal may mainly include two processes: adsorption and regeneration. And biological and catalytic oxidation may play an important role in the regeneration.
