Zero Field Temperature Depencence of the Rare Earth Sublattice Magnetization in RTiO3; R = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er and Tm

The compounds RTiO3, R = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er and Tm, form an isomorphous series having the GdFeO3 type structure which is an orthorhombic distortion of the cubic perovskite structure. The magnetic properties of these materials differ from those found in the isostructural compounds RMO3, M = Cr or Fe. This difference in the magnetic behaviour can be understood by considering the isotropic R3+−M3+ coupling. In the case of Fe3+ or Cr3+, the transition metal moments couple antiferromagnetically so the R3+−M3+ isotropic coupling nearly vanishes by symmetry. This coupling would be rigourously zero if the structure was the ideal cubic perovskite.
