Vibration Monitoring of Tool Failure in Drilling

Abstract

This paper presents a study on monitoring tool failure in drilling using vibration signature analysis techniques. Time and frequency domain signature features are developed which are sensitive to tool breakage. The ability of these features to detect drill breakage was verified experimentally. The drilling tests were performed using 3 mm diameter high speed steel twist drills, and cast iron workpieces. The results confirm the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed monitoring features.
