MIMO Channel Capacity Modeling using Markov Models

Abstract

In this paper, we consider a narrow-band point-to-point multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) communication system with $n_t$ transmitters and $n_r$ receivers. We assume the receiver has perfect knowledge of the channel while the transmitter has no channel knowledge. Such MIMO systems can then be used in conjunction with some form of feedback information at the transmitter to design spectrally efficient transceivers. In this paper, we consider a rate-feedback system, which feedback the possible information rate of the wireless system, as frequently as pos-sible. In particular, we propose Markov model principles to predict the capacity changes during the feedback interval time and adjust the transmitter power or rate or both online to suit the wireless channel. Specifically, the transmitter will continuously learn and track the channel capacity changes between any two known instantaneous channel information rates. keywords: MIMO, Capacity, Markov model.
