Seismic assessment of existing RC structures

Abstract

The seismic resistance of existing reinforced concrete structures may be inadequate due to weaknesses in the structural system and nonductile detailing. To mitigate the seismic and other natural hazards, existing inadequate or deteriorating structures should be rehabilitated. The evaluation of the seismic resistance of existing structures and their deficiencies is essential before an appropriate repair or upgrade system can be designed. The performance of the structure may be evaluated in terms of its lateral load resistance, global or interstory drift and potential damage. This review presents the state‐of‐the‐art, concepts, philosophy and approaches for the seismic assessment of existing reinforced concrete structures. The state of practice in the evaluation of the performance of structures, methods of analysis, and limitations are discussed.
