Development of innovative asset management solutions for a large Canadian city

Abstract

The City of Hamilton is located in southwestern Ontario, Canada. It is home to over 500,000 people, located approximately one hour from the major border crossing to the United States. In order to accommodate the demands of a thriving city, the City of Hamilton has been a progressive proponent of asset management and has implemented many innovative maintenance and rehabilitation treatments. This research presented in this paper discusses various design parameters, typical site conditions, materials properties and life cycle cost tools which assist them in the decision making process. Most recently, they have directed their decision-making toward long life pavement treatments and designs. This has included the use of innovative materials and designs for roads ranging from heavy traffic with many trucks to very low traffic volumes. The paper presents these treatments and how their asset management framework utilizes these advanced tools to assist them in the decision making process.
