Study of the effects of welding by two types of fillerwire along with different pre& post heat treatment on weldment mechanical properties of AISI 4130 welded by TIG process

Abstract

The sensibilities of the high strength steel and ultra high strength steel, their vast applications in strategically industries such as aircraft and shipping and also the different welding problems, outstand the need to investigate the weld ability and mechanical properties of these types of steels. In this research we have selected some test plates according to available standards and joined them together by Vee-Joint. We selected two different types of filler wire and then exerted three different preheat and postheat treatments on both groups. We intend to find out the best condition of mechanical properties in AISI 4130 steel weldments. The three types of heat treatments are alternatively without preheat and postheat, with preheat only and finally with preheat and postheat. Also the two types of fillerwire used in this research are fillerwire with similar chemical composition to the base metal (prefix B-Table2) and fillerwire with a lower carbon content and a bit higher other alloy elements content comparing to the first type of fillerwire explained above. (Prefix L-Table 3). We tried the examination explained above on six test plates all with the same welding parameters. We next exerted the required tests including tensile tests, side bend tests and impact tests ( for weld zone and HAZ) on our test plates. Thickness of test plates was 10 mm and the material selected was AISI 4130.
