An innovative lens for comprehending the human experience in society: An analysis of the acculturation theory

Abstract

There is increasing momentum in the 21st century to examine person-environment interactions as essential components in understanding human integration (immigration, relocation) and transitions (developmental stage, retirement, education, marital status) from one context to the next. Regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, we all experience transitions on a daily basis and these transitions are fundamental to human growth and development. Acculturation theory provides a lens into how individuals and groups experience cultural and contextual shifts and examine more specifically the psychological and behavior challenges. The objective of this chapter is to discuss the theoretical underpinnings of acculturation theory while embedding narratives of the acculturation experience and process drawn from personal and professional knowledge. The integration of acculturation theory and inherent concepts can provide a reassuring framework upon which to rely in interpreting human integration within society and exploring responses and behaviours. Cultural humility and cultural intelligence will reduce fear of diversity and establish positive partnerships between individuals and groups. Acculturation can become a natural worldview for understanding human experience if embraced within mainstream ideologies.
