Telecommunications: Are the Regulators Killing Innovation?

Abstract

The ending of monopolies in most European Union countries on January 1 1998 has shifted the industry spotlight to the role of regulation. With particular reference to the contrasting non‐monopoly experience of telecommunications in the US and the UK, this article argues that regulation – as implemented in the US – suppresses innovation and investment.
