Transformational leadership and OCB: A test of a moderated mediated model

Abstract

There is abundant evidence for positive associations among transformational leadership, leader-member-exchange (LMX) and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). However, the explanatory processes linking leadership to performance, and the moderating influences of other variables on this relationship, require research. We test a model wherein the influence of transformational leadership on OCB is mediated by LMX, and moderated by gender and the cultural value of power distance. Drawing on a sample of employees from organizations in Taiwan, we found both gender and power distance moderated the relationship between transformational leadership and OCB. We also found a significant moderated mediation effect for gender at the LMX-OCB path. The theoretical and applied significance of these findings are discussed as are future research directions.
