Velocity of centre of pressure excursions as an indicator of postural control systems in children

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the pattern of development of open-loop (ballistic) and closed-loop (sensory guided) postural control in young children. Children (n = 81) aged 4–13 years and adults (n = 26) stood quietly on a force plate to determine velocity of centre of pressure of ground reaction forces. The results show a distinct age-related change in postural velocity in both feet together and feet heel-to-toe stances (eyes open and eyes closed). The authors suggest a development from predominantly fast open-loop control (4–7 years) to closed-loop control at 8 years.
