A microfluidic design to generate two dimensional chemical gradients

Abstract

Here we present a microfluidic gradient generator that has a small footprint and is capable of generating two dimensional chemical gradients and a corresponding traditional one dimensional chemical gradient in two parallel channels. We demonstrate through computational fluid dynamics analysis and standard experimental microfluidic testing with FITC conjugated IgG antibody solution that the design successfully creates two dimensional gradients under various flow rates. The device's simplicity in design and use, in combination with its various capabilities, would allow impactful applications, such as developing a three dimensional extracellular matrix that mimics in vivo conditions.
