The point grinding of nickel-based superalloys is discussed. The fatigue life patterns for both the polished and high speed machining (HSM) surfaces are broadly similar with the latter possessing slightly better fatigue characteristics. The analysis suggested that the surface residual stress is the dominating factor in influencing the oneset of fatigue failure.
