Incremental finite element model for rewetting analysis

Abstract

Previous numerical models of the quenching process require certain simplification of the actual problem in order to obtain a solution. An incremental approach has been developed using a general finite element program that removes these restrictions and provides enhanced modelling capabilities for rewetting simulations. Transient quenching of a hot surface is simulated by successively activating the convective loading on the surface of a stationary finite element mesh in an incremental fashion. A series of simulations are performed on a two-dimensional model with a step function heat transfer coefficient and a constant rewetting velocity. The rewetting solutions obtained with this model are shown to be in excellent agreement with an analytical solution.
