Performance of wear compensation strategies in multi-machine manufacturing cells with CMM feedback

Abstract

Industry has deployed fully automated manufacturing cells including: machining, part handling, measurement and automatic feedback technologies. The levels of scrap, rework, downtime (waste) in these cells can exceed initial statistical based estimates by over 40 times. As such, the desire existed in industry to accurately understand the underlying causes of the waste, such that economically viable cells are designed and constructed. This paper examines the relevant effects that drive the waste levels, allowing them to be predicted and ultimately controlled.
