Improved refining slags by addition of iron ore during converter steelmaking

Abstract

Industrial trials were conducted to improve slag conditions during steelmaking by addition of variable quantities of iron ore to the converter as part of the fluxing materials at 30%of the blowing time. It was found that with addition of 20 kg/t iron ore, the FeO content in the slag reached 20%-30%, and the basicity was in the range 3.0-4.0. Kinetic conditions were significantly improved and the dephosphorization rate increased. The results from the trials established a foundation for an improved steelmaking operation with less slag generation.
