Analysis of desiliconization reaction kinetics in a BOF

Abstract

A multi-zone kinetic model for analyzing desiliconization in a top blowing steelmaking converter is being proposed. In this model, the vessel is divided into three reactive zones e.g. jet impact, slag-bulk metal and slag-metal-gas emulsion zones. A mathematical treatment of the kinetics of reactions in each zone has been developed. The buoyancy aided chemical reaction rate due to the bloating of metal droplets has been used for analyzing oxidation of Si in the emulsion zone. The model results are validated against the measured industrial data and a new mechanism to study the kinetics of Si refining is presented. This model provides a basis for further understanding of slag generation in the early stage of the blow.
